Footnotes
1. I translate「静けさ」as “silence”, but it has a connotation of peace or tranquility, as opposed to being oppressive or sad.
2. These two lines are written in a way which make me think that the word「高く」agrees with is supposed to be ambiguous. Although I eventually decided on it agreeing with「響け」you can also it translate it this way: “The sound of the sky, echo: overcome overbearing sorrow;”.
3. I translate「奏でる」as “play a tune with”, but「奏でる」specifically means “to play something like an instrument”. Weirdly niche word that doesn’t have a counterpart in English.
Additionally, neither of these two lines have any defined subject, so they can be translated as either “you play…” or “I play…”. The first instance has a “you” in the preceeding line, so it’s likely that this one means “you”, but the second instance has no subject in either line, so it’s possible that it’s different.
Maybe this was supposed to be a contrast? In the first verse, the lines refer to the object of the song, and in the second, they refer to the singer? I can’t decide, but I felt it warranted noting, because there’s ambiguity here that may be intentional.
