| 静けさと安らぎが遠くで招くから もう少し先にまで行けそうな気がする ただ手を取り合って 凍りつく夜を越えて | Because serenity and tranquillity beckon from afar, I feel as if I can go just a little bit further; Holding just your hand Crossing beyond the frozen night; |
| 傷付いて俯いた時に出会ったから 切なさが失くなれば離れて行くようで 汚れた水の上だから月の影が綺麗で | Because we met with wounded hearts and downcast heads, If we lost our suffering, it seems we’d drift apart; A moon reflected on sullied water becomes pure;1 |
| それは哀しみの語る物語 恋と呼ぶことにまだためらっている 凍てついた夜に近くなる星は 君がいる夢をいつまで見せてくれるだろう | That’s a story of which sorrow sings; I’m hesitating to call it “love”; The stars of that frozen night, drawing nearer: I wonder how long they’ll show me dreams of you; |
| 想い出を飲み込んで空の蒼は深く ぬくもりのくれるもの 手に入らないもの 何を分け合って何を捨ててゆくここに | A yawning blue sky swallows my memories; The things which keep me warm The things which escape my grasp: Faced with them here, what am I sharing, and what am I throwing away? |
| このまま二人で凍てついた空の 彼方へ行けると どうか信じていて 誰よりも近く何処までも遠く 君がいる夢はもう消せない記憶だから | Just like this, with the two of us – this frozen sky We can go beyond it Please, keep believing in that; Closer together than anyone, further apart than anything; Because nothing can now extinguish these unforgettable dreams of you; |
| それは哀しみの語る物語 恋と呼ぶことにまだためらっている 凍てついた夜に近くなる星に 君がいる夢をまだ見つめていたいだけで | That’s a story of which sorrow sings; I’m hesitating to call it “love”; Within the stars of that frozen night, drawing nearer, I want only to remain gazing at dreams of you… |
Footnotes
1. Usually,「綺麗」can easily be translated as “beautiful”, but it means “beautiful” in a “pure” and “clean” way. This is a very, very clear thread throughout the song, in that something that seems, on its surface, negative, can in fact be what makes something positive: sorrow births love, dirt cleanses beauty.
So, even though the line literally means something like “because it’s reflected on the surface of dirty water, the moon is beautiful”, I wanted to maintain that deliberate contrast with the impurity of the water and the purity of the moon, wherein the impurity is–counterintuitively–doing the purifying.
Thematic Commentary
The theme of oscillating distance between the singer and their subject is interesting. I also like the interplay of sorrows that bind them together as much as push them apart, and the way the lyrics combine visuals of ice, water, and sky. Then there’s the way that the moon becomes beautiful/pure only when reflected in dirtied water.
Personally, this reads as two people who want to remain in a rut of depression because they’re scared that, if they lost their depression and healed as people, then they’d have nothing binding them together anymore, and that loneliness would be worse than their indefinite suffering.
I also enjoy the themes of stasis and the fear of the unknown, too. The only reason they can keep going is because everything is “frozen”; the singer finds reassurance in the fact that nothing is going to change, that “peace and tranquillity”–recovery–will only “beckon from afar”. Even this central relationship is nothing more than a dream to be gazed at from a distance, impersonal and transient.
Lots of messing with juxtaposition in this song in general. Really good stuff.
