| 手を伸ばして君に触れたとき 高い音符が胸の中にひとつ 暮れ行く空 二人で見つめた どこまでも続く世界が 呼んでいた | When I reached out to touch you, A high note, within my chest, alone; The darkening sky As we gazed upon it, A world without limits Called out to us; |
| 恋に落ちて痛みを知り 人は人になれるのだろう 君が泣いた夜の向こう 響き渡る時のシンバル | By falling in love, by experiencing pain, Isn’t that how a person becomes human? Far beyond the ends of the night that you wept Were the cymbals of resounding time;1 |
| この空に描く二人の運命(カルマ)が 愛の歌を奏でるときっと信じて 赤い月の涙 静かな音楽 生きて行こう 光を分け合うように | The fate that we write together under this sky,2 I believe it will surely play a song of love; The tears of the red moon A serene music; Let’s go on living, So that we may share the light; |
| 君の声が呼んでくれたから はじめての願いが生まれたようで その手を取り 見果てぬ空まで 六月の赤い月影 追いかけて | When you called out to me, It was as if a wish were born for the very first time; With the taking of your hand Until an unfinished sky, The red moonlight of June Is pursuing us; |
| 生まれ堕ちた涙の海 人は何度叫ぶのだろう 潰えた夢、影の中に 光あれと 響けアレルヤ | Born into a sea of tears, How many times have people cried, I wonder? A shattered dream, within its shadows: “Let there be light!” Echo, this allelujah!3 |
| 生きて行く、ただそれだけの運命(カルマ)が 喜びより苦しみを呼ぶのはどうして 夢見るのはいつも静かな音楽 君と眠る彼方へ届くように | To be alive – the fate of this alone,2 Why does it invoke more sorrow than joy? I dream always of serene music, So that I may reach across the distance to where I sleep together with you; |
| 君に触れたとき 初めてのうたが世界に生まれた | When I reached out to touch you, A song was born into the world for the very first time; |
| 砕け落ちた夏の中に 響き渡る嘆きの歌 恋も夢もいつか消えて それでもまだ届かぬ声 | Within a broken summer, A song of resounding lament; Love and dreams both will someday die out, Yet, still, my voice doesn’t reach; |
| 汚れた手で花を喰らい 君と共に生きるのだろう 滅びの夢 時の向こう 聞こえるでしょう 遠いアレルヤ | As I take a flower with sullied hands, Is it possible to live together with you, I wonder? Far beyond the ends of time, within a ruined dream, You can hear it, right? A distant allelujah; |
| この空にたった一度だけでいい 愛の歌を響かせて 焔のように 溢れ出すよ 激しく静かな音楽 赤い月は夢を見る 最後の空 | It would be nice if, just once in this sky,4 A song of love bursts out Like a flame, And begins to overflow! A serenely ardent music; The red moon watches and dreams: A final sky |
Footnotes
1. The line「響き渡る時のシンバル」in Japanese means something close to “the cymbals of a time which (will) echo(es)/resound(s)”, but I’m not entirely sure how to communicate that succinctly in English.
2. Although I chose to translate「運命」as “fate”, the reading for the kanji (usually read as「うんめい」and meaning “fate/destiny”) is「カルマ」, which has an interesting implication for the tone of the song; “karma” has a different connotation than “fate/destiny”, and it could be that the singer is perceiving what happens to her as karmic retribution of some kind?
3. Here, “echo” is written in the imperative mood – the singer is ordering this alleluia to echo (within the shattered dream). Because English has no definite way to communicate the imperative, I chose to clarify.
4. This is written in something close to the subjunctive mood, which is why I translated this the way I did; when she says “it’s okay if this happens”, she’s “permitting” it in the sense that she’s trying to imply that she wants it without outright stating it.
